How Sperm CryoProtec Protects Sperm During Freezing

16 Dec 2025 | News, Tips & Tricks

As the holiday season approaches and many of us are longing for colder winter weather, it feels fitting to highlight how Sperm CryoProtec protects sperm during the freezing and thawing process.

The role of glucose in Sperm CryoProtec

  • Osmotic balance: Glucose acts as an osmotic agent, drawing water out of sperm cells before freezing. This reduces the amount of intracellular water that could otherwise form damaging ice crystals.
  • Reduced ice-crystal injury: By lowering intracellular water, glucose helps prevent sharp ice crystals from forming inside the cells, which can puncture membranes and impair sperm function.
  • High glucose concentration: This ensures effective osmotic protection, complementing glycerol’s cryoprotective role while being gentler on sperm cells.

Optimized cryoprotection with glycerol

  • Reduced glycerol content: While glycerol is a traditional cryoprotectant, the proportion being reduced as far as possible to minimize toxicity to sperm, while still providing adequate cryoprotection.

By combining a low level of glycerol to minimize toxicity with a high concentration of glucose to reduce intracellular water and ice-crystal damage, Sperm CryoProtecTM provides a balanced and effective solution for preserving sperm quality during freezing and thawing.
